DX12 VRAM Relief — VRAM pressure mitigation for The Witcher 3 Next‑Gen
A conservative configuration tweak for The Witcher 3 Next‑Gen DX12 renderer that makes the engine unload and clean up resources more aggressively to reduce VRAM buildup, stutters, and crashes.
- Faster texture unload and increased automatic discard
- Reduced sector/resource and mesh prefetch distances
- Shortened memory unloader delay and grace period
- Increased cleanup iterations and lower pool memory triggers
- Installs as a single override .ini at bin/config/platform/pc/dx12_vram_relief.ini
Requirements: Requires The Witcher 3 Next‑Gen DX12 renderer; install with a mod manager that supports game‑root deployment (archive structured for Vortex).
DX12 VRAM Relief is a lightweight configuration tweak aimed at reducing VRAM pressure and lingering resource buildup during extended DX12 play sessions of The Witcher 3 Next‑Gen. It targets cases where GPU memory usage climbs past capacity and the system falls back to heavy shared‑memory or pagefile use, causing stuttering, instability, or crashes. The mod adjusts a handful of engine memory‑management settings—encouraging faster texture unloading, more aggressive resource cleanup, reduced prefetch distances, and tighter unloader timing—while avoiding changes to texture resolution, ray tracing presets, lighting, grass density, shadow quality, or gameplay values.
These conservative changes include increased texture unload/automatic discard behavior, reduced sector and mesh prefetch ranges, shortened memory unloader delays and grace periods, more cleanup iterations, and lower mesh and RT pool memory triggers. Results will vary by GPU, driver, resolution, ray tracing and texture settings, installed mods, and session length; this is a mitigation, not a guaranteed fix for every DX12 memory issue. The package installs as a single override .ini (bin/config/platform/pc/dx12_vram_relief.ini) and should be compatible with most gameplay and visual mods, though it may conflict with other mods that edit the same engine keys. Uninstalling the override file via your mod manager restores prior settings. This release was developed with the assistance of agentic AI tools used to inspect configuration behavior and organize the changes.
