Dawn of War 2’s Last Stand turned the stale comp-stomp into tense, teamwork-first co-op action — and it’s still easy to find a match 17 years later. The mode survives through re-releases and a dedicated player base.
Comp-stomp is the usual fallback when mixing casual and hardcore RTS friends: load into a map against AI, team up, and crush the bots. It sounds fine, but most RTS AI either pretends to be human or cheats, and without a real threat you don’t get the improvisation or panic that makes RTS fun. Dawn of War 2’s The Last Stand solved that by turning co-op into something closer to a MOBA: each player controls a single commander unit and must survive waves of upgraded enemies, forcing real teamwork and tense moments. The mode was spun off as The Last Standalone on Steam in 2011, though that version is no longer available. Today the easiest way to play is Dawn of War 2: Anniversary Edition, a 2024 re-release that brings the mode back into rotation.
