The Scroll of Taiwu hits 1.0 after eight years, adds English localization
The Scroll of Taiwu, a Chinese indie that debuted on Steam Early Access in 2018 and drew millions of players, has reached 1.0. Its full release includes an English localization, though translation work remains ongoing.
Before Black Myth: Wukong or Phantom Blade: Zero, The Scroll of Taiwu was already drawing millions after launching in Steam Early Access in 2018. Eight years on, the indie has reached 1.0. It’s not an action or soulslike game—the toughest hours are early on, especially for players unfamiliar with Chinese mythology. Publishing advisor Leye “Yager” Yu admits “the first two hours of gameplay is kind of boring,” but says players who stick with it become deeply invested. Yager describes the game as a mix of Crusader Kings 2, Kenshi and Baldur’s Gate: you roam an open world, learn martial arts, meet people, manage towns and resolve conflicts that shape the future. The simulation is so deep there’s an active Discord community sharing strategies. A lack of English localization limited Western uptake—Yager says the script runs to over 5 million words, making translation difficult. The full release finally adds English support, but it remains a work in progress, Yager says.
