Original Nintendo Switch Line to Leave European Retailers After Mid‑February 2027

Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the original Nintendo Switch, which has stayed in production even after the Switch 2 launched in 2025. Nintendo announced that the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED will no longer be available to European retailers after mid‑February 2027, and the Nintendo Store will stop carrying the original models in European markets that month. The company has not announced a retirement date for North America. The change follows an EU regulation requiring consoles to allow user‑replaceable batteries; redesigning the original Switch to meet that rule was deemed not cost‑effective, so Nintendo is discontinuing it. Nintendo says it will begin releasing Switch 2 consoles with replaceable batteries as soon as this summer and that the revised models are “virtually identical to the Switch 2 console that’s already on the market.” It also cautioned that “Due to a variety of factors, revised products may not become available in all European countries simultaneously.”
