OpenMW 0.51.0 adds scripting support for magic mods and fixes crashes
OpenMW 0.51.0 has arrived, bringing a scripting API for custom magic effects, broader enchantment casting, and numerous crash and usability fixes.
Morrowind may be nearly a quarter-century old and rough around the edges, but OpenMW keeps it playable on modern systems. The open-source engine's 0.51.0 release adds a scripting API that lets modders create custom magic effects—meaning features from mods like Tamriel Rebuilt that once required the original engine's script extender can now be reproduced in OpenMW. The update also allows all characters to cast enchantments and introduces various graphical improvements showcased in a video breakdown. Technical fixes include many Lua-related crash fixes and fixes for gamepad menu navigation annoyances. Existing save files are safe to keep using with the new release, though new saves created in 0.51.0 won’t load in older OpenMW versions due to a file format change.
