Sand: Raiders of Sophie is like Sea of Thieves on land — nastier for solo players
Cruise the dunes hunting loot and trade cannon volleys with other crews in this first-person base-building extraction shooter.
Sand: Raiders of Sophie launched into early access today after a number of last-minute delays, and after about two hours I came away thinking it’s Sea of Thieves on land — and harsher for solo players. Vehicles don’t simply respawn; if your trampler is destroyed you have to build a new one. The walking bases, called tramplers, are the star: you prep them before missions aboard a Victorian gaslamp space station orbiting a desert planet, either by snapping modules together or using a preset model. Bring handheld weapons and ammo, plus a crate of heavy trampler guns like 40mm and 80mm cannons. Once deployed you mount and load the guns, manually fire the huge engine, and take the slow, smoke-spewing behemoth across the dunes, clambering up ladders and moving through its compartments.
