VGHF director says piracy is currently the only way to preserve games as Sony ends PS5 discs
Sony will stop producing PS5 discs in 2028. Video Game History Foundation director Frank Cifaldi says, given industry inaction, piracy is the only practical preservation route right now.
Sony announced it will cease production of PS5 discs in 2028. Responding to a Bluesky post that called piracy "the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now," Video Game History Foundation director Frank Cifaldi agreed. "As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate," he wrote. Cifaldi added that the VGHF has tried to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but "they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative." In a later VGHF statement he expanded the criticism and noted the development was not a surprise: museums and archives have long prepared for a discless future, since simply putting discs on a shelf won’t preserve new games.
