Guild Wars 3 Won’t Use Subscriptions or Battle Passes
ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 will have no subscription fee and will not include battle passes or similar paid seasonal systems, the studio head wrote in a blog post after the game's Summer Games Fest 2026 reveal.
ArenaNet has confirmed Guild Wars 3 will not charge a subscription fee and will avoid battle passes or other paid seasonal reward tracks. In a blog post, studio head Colin Johanson listed core design pillars for the newly announced MMO and reiterated a long-standing Guild Wars stance against monthly fees. "When Guild Wars launched in 2005, that wasn't the norm," Johanson said, noting the series chose accessibility and long-term value over subscriptions. He also warned many live-service games now hide subscriptions "inside optional packages that obfuscates the subscription from the player." "When we say Guild Wars 3 won't have a subscription fee, we mean it," Johanson added. "No monthly fees and no battle pass subscription fees. Just buy the game and play when you want."
