Guild Wars 3 is 'significantly more' MMO than the original, but won't copy GW2
ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 will sit closer to the MMORPG end of the spectrum than the original Guild Wars, but it won’t try to reproduce Guild Wars 2’s distinctive large-scale gameplay. The studio wants all three games to coexist as different experiences in Tyria.
ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson wrote in a blog post that Guild Wars 3 will be an MMO — but not a retread of Guild Wars 2. He describes the first Guild Wars as a “cooperative online RPG” that came to be called an MMO, while Guild Wars 2 is a bona fide MMO designed to subvert some genre conventions. Guild Wars 3, he says, “lands near the middle of the MMO spectrum… While it fits the definition of an MMORPG significantly more than Guild Wars Reforged does, it doesn't try to replicate the large-scale gameplay pillars that so uniquely define Guild Wars 2.” Johanson adds this is broad and vague, and with only limited details available, social media is full of speculation — from New World-like ideas to a direct GW1 successor and everything in between.
