Wallpaper Engine to Remove App from Steam Over Malware Concerns

Wallpaper Engine, a long-running Steam wallpaper tool, will have its application removed after developers discovered it had been hijacked months ago to distribute malware while the program ran in the background. In a Steam statement, the devs said users have a limited window to back up any wallpapers before the app is removed on Monday, July 6. They added removing the app affects just “0.5% of all wallpapers with actual user numbers being much lower than even that.” The statement warned executable files can’t be reliably secured: “There will always be blind spots and ways for people to bypass them.” A Securlist report earlier this month says malware may have been inserted as far back as late 2025 and could hijack accounts, damage drives, install crypto miners, or deploy ransomware.
