Marathon Mid-Season Update Adds Vault Breaker Endgame PvE Mode
Bungie revealed a mid-season update for Marathon introducing Vault Breaker, an experimental endgame PvE mode, plus the first changes to the Cradle Evolution progression. Vault Breaker offers solo, duo, or crew runs through Cryo Archive vaults and adds a new currency, Vault Data.
Bungie says next month’s mid-season update for Marathon will add Vault Breaker, an experimental endgame PvE mode. Players can tackle the Cryo Archive’s vaults solo, as a duo, or in a crew without encountering other players; each vault is described as progressively challenging, with a unique progression leading to a final vault and “the mysterious entity within.”
Entry requires a Sponsored Kit, and players must leave any gear they find in the vaults when they exit to avoid flooding the game with high-end loot. Vault Breaker also introduces Vault Data, a new currency that can be removed from the mode and used to upgrade Sponsored Kits or other gear for use in other activities.
The update also brings the first new iteration of the Cradle Evolution system, which lets players earn persistent improvements between runs. After maxing the Cradle, players can reset it to zero to gain another maximum Energy point and earn unique cosmetics; Bungie says those cosmetics will be available later in the season but can be earned ahead of their in-game debut.
